Even if oxygen tanks were strapped to our backs, “Art of the Dive: Portraits of the Deep” is the kind of exhibition liable to leave viewers breathless.
In this uncommon hoard of paintings and sculpture, sharks, sport fish and whales surge forward; the bottom of the sea opens up to inspection, as if we’re passengers in a submarine made of glass walls; and everywhere one looks arrays of exotic creatures are staring back. Well, with a little imagination, at least it feels that way.
Art of the Dive, a show featuring works by some of the world’s finest marine artists, recently opened at the International Game Fish Association’s Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum in Dania Beach, Florida. It’s the first stop on a barnstorm, designed and curated by David J. Wagner, that in 2012 moves onto the south coast of Texas and then into the Colorado Rockies.
"As human beings, we have an incredible capacity for expressing empathy. Empathy for other beings is what sets our species apart,”says sculptor Kent Ullberg, whose animal monuments fill public spaces on three different continents. He has several smaller pieces on display in Art of the Dive.
